Tools

A project of this undertaking is obviously going to require an array of tools. Prior to starting I spent a good deal of time shifting through the Glen - L forum to discover what tools I needed.

I thought I had enough but right from day one I was out buying tools.

I started with the normal array of home handyman style tools, e.g. hammer, electric, battery and hand drill, circular saw, jig saw, belt and random sander. An array of tired chisels. Also half a dozen planes largely inherited from my grandfather.

Thicknesser

The other tool I have so far purchased is a thicknesser, great buy and I'm very happy with it, but at the same time saddened at how much of my wood ends up as saw dust.

I have been looking into methods of sharpening my planes and chisels. After a bit of surfing I came across what seems to be commonly known as the "ScarySharp" method. This involves using a series of grades of sandpaper, for planes etc generally 2000 grit is as far as you go, but I found demo of knife sharpening using much finer paper. I tried it on a couple if chisels and planes tonight with pretty good results. Regrettably most of my planes / chisels are in poor condition, and so it will take a couple of iterations. But I now have two chisels which are usable, and sign of hope for two more.

Honing Guide

I picked up a honing guide today, and using that on my rounded off plane blade, I have very nearly got it back to square.  About 2-3mm on each side are still a little bit rounded, but I'm not going to worry about them, they will get fixed up over the next couple of sharpens. This guide has been great, I have now got two excellent planes, a one good chisel, slowly working my way through my "blade" tools.

JIG SAW

My Jig Saw which was really old died, so I replaced it with a new Bosch one.  Some of the best moeny I have ever spent.

I have also bought a power planner, haven't really tried it, but I am hoping it will negate the need to purchase a jointer.

PLANES

The planes, while in need of sharpening are a huge bonus, there are around $1000 worth of them. I have been reading up on sharpening techniques and over the coming weeks will tidy them up, but that means spending more on tools, in this case an blade sharpening jig.

Circular Plane

Great tool that I would recommend, is a "circular" plane.  I have an old Stanley No 20 plane and its great for fair the frame parts after being cut out using the jig saw.

Belt Sander

I have a Black & Decker "Dragster" Belt sander.  Its works fine, but I did have a problem with the dust collector not collecting.  Had to take it to bits and found the path the dust takes to be blocked.  Not surprising really, it follows a fairly tortured path.  I have also unfortunately lost the adapter for connecting it to the shop Vac.

Oscillating Tool

Bought this today to fix a mistake I made on the frames to stringer attachment.  Worked VERY well.

Having had this for a couple of weeks now, I would say this is probably one of the best tools you could arm yourself with to build a boat

Cordless Drill

My old cordless drill which is black and decker has served me faithfully, and still works, but its battery is pretty much had it (second one).  So I decided to up the power, and go for Lithium technology.  I am VERY happy with this tool.  This picture is very similar to what I have bought, I think the Bosch website has the wrong picture up.

Random orbital sander

This is my latest toy.  I had a 1/3rd sheet Black And decker orbital sander, but really it was crap, and it died, so had a good excuse to go and buy this one.  So far very happy with its performance

Brad Gun

I have been meaning to put a picture of my little brad gun here for ages.

Is got a fair coating of epoxy now.  Its not he genuine article from Raptor but it mostly shoots them ok.

Compressor

I was borrowing my brothers, but he needed it back so I bought this one second hand
